About BlackPen

Founder Story

Hi, I’m Skylar, founder of BlackPen Editing. BlackPen started the way a lot of indie journeys start: I was writing my own book, trying to level up my story, and constantly hearing the same complaint from other authors, “I want developmental feedback, but the price tags are brutal.”

So I built the kind of service I wish existed: story-first developmental feedback that’s affordable, practical, and actually usable during revision. I don’t believe in vague commentary or “this didn’t work for me” notes with no direction. My goal is simple, help you see what’s working, pinpoint what’s weakening the book, and give you a clear plan to fix it.

I’ve also been intentional about quality. I’ve had guidance from editors with 15+ years of experience, and I use a structured, streamlined analysis process behind the scenes so you get faster turnaround without losing the depth that developmental work requires.

No fluff. No gatekeeping. Just honest, actionable feedback, so your next draft is stronger on purpose, not luck.

Why Developmental Editing Must Come First

Don’t waste money on copy editing until your story structure works

1
Developmental Edit
Fix plot, pacing, characters
2
Self-Revision
Implement the changes
3
Copy Edit
Polish sentences
4
Proofreading
Final typo check

A Common Mistake

Many authors pay for copy editing first, then realize they need to restructure chapters or add new scenes. That expensive copy edit was wasted because the manuscript changed substantially. Get your structure solid before you polish sentences.

REAL SAMPLE EXCERPT

Priority Action: Chemistry Collapses at ~40%

Genre: Contemporary Romance • Issue Type: Relationship Arc

  • Priority 1: Chapters 8–10 flatten the romantic tension (three low-stakes scenes; no obstacle, no friction).
Reader impact: This is a common DNF point in romance because escalation pauses right when readers expect it to spike.
What I’d recommend: Insert a conflict-reveal in Chapter 9 that preserves attraction but raises stakes.
    • Add this scene: Emma learns Jack is the developer trying to tear down her grandmother’s bookshop.
    • Foreshadow: Plant 3 subtle hints in Chapters 3, 5, and 7 so the reveal feels inevitable.
    • Revise Chapter 10: Make it aftermath (anger + attraction + loyalty conflict), not “cool down.”
Why this works: It converts “they like each other” into “they want each other, but the cost is real.” That’s tension.
Micro-example: Replace coffee-shop small talk with confrontation:
“You’re everything I hate about this city.”
“Then why can’t you stop staring at my mouth?”

Implementation Checklist

  • ✓ Insert a ~1,500-word confrontation scene at the end of Chapter 9
  • ✓ Add 3 foreshadowing hints about Jack’s job in Chapters 3, 5, and 7
  • ✓ Revise Chapter 10 to show Emma’s internal conflict (loyalty vs attraction)
  • ✓ Adjust the Chapter 11 kiss to carry guilt/anger undertones

Questions? We’ve Got Answers

How do I know if I need developmental editing vs copy editing?
If you’re worried about whether your plot makes sense, whether your pacing drags, whether your characters feel flat, or whether your story “works”, you need developmental editing. Copy editing fixes grammar, sentence structure, and word choice. That comes after you’re confident in your story structure. There’s no point polishing sentences in a chapter you might need to cut or completely rewrite. Think of it this way: developmental editing is the blueprint, copy editing is the paint job. Get the structure right first.
Do you work with my specific genre?
Yes! We’ve analyzed 500+ manuscripts across all major genres: Romance (all subgenres), Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Mystery/Thriller, Literary Fiction, YA, Women’s Fiction, and more. Our analysis focuses on universal story principles while respecting genre conventions. Your report will reference comparable titles and genre expectations specific to your market.
What if I can’t afford the full payment upfront?
We offer a 50/50 payment plan: 50% to begin analysis, 50% upon delivery. We also run quarterly promotions for first-time authors. Email us at Skylar@BlackPenEditing.com to discuss options. We believe every serious author deserves professional feedback, regardless of budget constraints.
Will you steal my ideas or story?
Your work is protected by copyright the moment you write it. We’ll sign an NDA if you’d like, but in 12 years and 500+ manuscripts, we’ve never had a confidentiality issue. We’re editors, not writers, we’re interested in helping you tell your story better, not taking it.
How is this different from beta reader feedback?
Beta readers give you reader reactions (“I was bored here” or “I loved this character”). We give you professional analysis of WHY readers feel that way and HOW to fix it. Instead of “your middle drags,” you’ll get “Chapters 12-15 lack conflict because your protagonist has no obstacles. Add XYZ scene to create tension.” Specific, actionable, professional.
What exactly is included in the 30+ page report?
Your report includes: Opening effectiveness analysis, chapter-by-chapter breakdown, character arc evaluation, plot structure analysis, pacing diagnosis, scene-level recommendations, dialogue assessment, theme integration review, market positioning notes, and a prioritized revision plan. Plus specific examples from your manuscript and comparable published books.
Can I see samples specific to my genre?
Yes! Email us at Skylar@BlackPenEditing.com with your genre, and we’ll send relevant sample pages from actual reports (with author permission). You can also download our general sample report above, which shows our analysis style and detail level.
What happens after I submit my manuscript?
Within 24 hours, you’ll receive confirmation and your editor assignment. We’ll note any specific concerns you have. Days 2-5: analysis phase. Days 6-7: report writing. Day 7: you receive your report via email. Days 8-21: you have email access for questions. It’s a clear, simple process with no surprises.
Do you work with self-published AND traditionally-seeking authors?
Yes! About 60% of our clients are indie authors planning to self-publish, and 40% are seeking traditional publication. Your report will include market positioning advice specific to your publishing path. Many traditionally-published authors still pay for our analysis before submitting to agents.
What if I disagree with your analysis?
Every recommendation includes clear reasoning based on story principles and reader psychology. You’ll understand not just WHAT to change but WHY it matters. That said, it’s YOUR book. Take what resonates, leave what doesn’t. Our job is to give you professional insight; your job is to make the creative decisions.
